2017 - Reflecting Through Photos

It's a cultural practice to reflect on your past year with the coming of a new one. Photos have that powerful ability to open a window to memory and aid in reminiscing about those past experiences. As professional photographers, we're up to our ears in photos, but we still find time every year to review through and try to find some of our favourites from the past 365 days. Photography is amazing because no matter how many  thousands of shots, both for business and personal use we have taken, we always find those singular frames that sum up a whole feeling, or a moment of learning, or something special we're just happy to have been a part of.

Here's a collection of those favourite shots, and a few stories along the way.

taken for the Mountaineer Inn in Lake Louise. We found this great climbing spot on the beautiful Jasper to Banff highway. This shot required Thomas to hike up steep, icy terrain without proper gear, but it was totally worth it!

Last year The 2018 Grey Cup was announced as taking place in Edmonton. The CFL commissioned us to take a number of photos of the cup around the city for the grand unveiling and promotional material. We got to meet Jeff, one of the keepers of the cup (such a cool gig) and photograph him at Commonwealth Stadium.

Chad Baba for an Avenue Magazine cover story. We rented out a huge gasoline generator to bring down into this river valley park to create the foggy morning effect. The very next day, it was even foggier than this, completely naturally. Nature plays cruel jokes sometimes, or maybe it just thought we wanted more fog in our lives.

Another Edmonton tourism shot. We often get good friends to help us out as shoots demand things like running up stairs.

We love photographing designers, makers, and craftspeople. Geoff was no exception, his work is really beautiful and his shop reclaimed from an old burnt out office chair company office/fabrication building was a really cool backdrop for this story in WesternLiving.

Sorrentino's Compassion House Foundation was one of our very first clients years ago, and we still work with them regularly. Their annual Fashion With Compassion fundraising event features women that have stayed in the house come to the show as special models and bravely go on stage and share their stories of community and the strength they found within it, and why Compassion House is so important. This year we approached them to do portraits of the special models as a reminder to the women of this powerful moment and to share this part of the story with even more people who couldn't attend the gala.

Thomas had the opportunity to Shoot in the Philippines this year!

We started shooting more video this year. Here is a quick video we made with our talented friend Jodie Bailey.

Bryan:  My daughter, born just over a year ago, has been a joy to see grow up and change through 2017. Never have photos been so important as a (feeble) attempt to try and freeze a moment or experience forever as life whizzes by. But just like that she's moving forward and growing day after day. She's taught me so much. Principally, to be less impatient, eagerly striving for the future and new things to come, and become present and relish in the now. Another lesson... it's always a balancing act and looking back is just like looking forward, and can make you forget to look at what you have right in your hands this second. So go out, and live. Take photos, of course we love doing that, but do it for being excited about the now as much as for looking at later, and keep growing and moving forward! Thanks for sticking with us, and have a great 2018!
